Burns, Hameed Score Fifty; England Lead By 42 Runs At Stumps

New Delhi: After England bowlers came up with a fiery performance to rattle the Indian batting lineup and bundle them up for paltry 78, openers Haseeb Hameed (60*) and Rory Burns (52*) stitched a solid 120-run partnership for the opening wicket to deny the visitors a breakthrough on the opening day of the third Test at Headingley on Wednesday. At Stumps on Day 1, England lead India by 42 runs.Veteran James Anderson (3/6), in his first spell, opened the floodgates with three-quick wickets in the first eight overs over the day, and later on Robinson, Curran and Overton all chipped in to bowl out the hosts for a paltry 78. From 67/5, India fell to 78 all out within just five overs. Rohit Sharma scored the highest 19 runs for India while Ajinkya Rahane scored 18 runs. This is India’s third lowest score against England. Earlier, in the Lord’s Test in 1974, India were bundled out for 42 and 58 in Manchester in 1952. Now after 47 years, the Indian cricket team has once again been bundled up for such low score. In Test cricket, this is Indian cricket team’s 9th lowest score. Last year, during India’s tour of Australia, India were reduced to just 36 runs in Adelaide. However, stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane-led India made a remarkable comeback to win the Border-Gavaskar Test series 2-1.In his very first over, Lord’s Test century wielder and India’s in-form opener KL Rahul was dismissed by Anderson for a duck. After this, Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli failed to tackle Anderson’s lethal out-swinging delivery and as a result the visitors lost three wickets for just 21 runs.In Test cricket, James Anderson has departed Virat Kohli seven times and 10 times in total, and three times in one-day internationals.Overton dismissed well-settled Rohit Sharma (19) in the 37th over and later Mohammed Shami (0). Sam Curran bagged two consecutive wickets by dismissing Ravindra Jadeja (4) and Jasprit Bumrah (0) in the 38th over. Team India had lost 4 wickets without scoring a single run. Ishant Sharma remained unbeaten on 8 runs, while Mohammad Siraj was dismissed for 3 runs off Overton’s delivery.
