Full Worm Moon on 7 March 2023
On Tuesday i.e. 7 March 2023, the moon will be in its full form in the sky which means super moon that too full. But why are scientists and some people calling this full super moon seen in spring as a worm moon. According to the American space agency NASA, the warm moon will be visible on 7 March 2023. If for some reason you could not see it at night then there is no need to be sad.
It will be visible every night till 9 March 2023, but there will be minor changes in its size. This will not be a full super moon. The term super moon was first used by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979. According to their definition, a super moon can be called that which is new or is visible in 90 percent of the earth’s perigee. i.e. close to earth.
Why it is called ‘Worm Moon’?
According to the folklore of the tribals living in Native America, the super moon seen in the month of March was called ‘Worm Moon’. It was called so because at this time insects used to emerge from the earth. However, the invertebrate insects of which the stories are told died out during the Ice Age 12,000 years ago.
NASA believes that not all insects were dead. Some of these are currently found in Europe and Asia. Whenever the glaciers of Europe and Asia melt, then these insects come out. That’s why Native American tribes call the supermoon that comes out in March as ‘Worm Moon’.
According to Hindu traditions, Full Moon i.e. Purnima is on 7 March 2023. There is also Holika Dahan on this day. This is the festival of victory of good over evil. Whereas, in Sri Lanka this ‘Worm Moon’ is called Medin or Medin Poya. In Sri Lanka it is celebrated to celebrate the first meeting of Lord Buddha with his father after attaining enlightenment.
